When searching for available updates on the Update site, you see the 0x80070002 or 0x80070003 error

Problem description
This error may occur if there is a content mismatch in the DataStore folder.


Applicable operating systems

  • Windows 2000

  • Windows XP

  • Windows Server 2003



Resolutions
1. Delete the contents of the DataStore folder
  1. Stop the Automatic Updates service
    1. Click Start.
    2. Choose Run
    3. .
    4. In the Run box, type services.msc.
    5. Click OK.
    6. Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
    7. Click Stop.
    Stopping the service will take a moment.
  2. Delete the contents of the DataStore folder
    1. Click Start.
    2. Choose Run.
    3. In the Run box, type %windir%\SoftwareDistribution.
    4. Click OK.
    5. Open the DataStore folder.
    6. Delete all contents of the DataStore folder.
    7. Close the window.
  3. Start the Automatic Updates service
    1. Click Start.
    2. Choose Run.
    3. In the Run box, type services.msc.
    4. Click OK.
    5. Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
    6. Click Start.
Starting the service will take a moment.
